“Let’s get married,”
She told him,
“It won’t be a real marriage.
We’ll each live in separate houses.”
She only meant getting married on paper.
Just so her parents would stop calling her a “spinster.”
Because she wanted her own place.
She wanted to live.
That’s what a marriage contract was to her: freedom.
