It happened five years ago,
But I still think about it.
My eighteen year old niece was a newly-wed at the time.
She discovered she had a heart disease.
I travelled with her for a year,
Because no one else could.

Her family thought she was a slut.
They thought she had sex with him.

Her sister was positive she did something bad with him.
Otherwise she wouldn’t be insisting on marrying him.
She must be trying to cover up what she did.

I tried to replace him with my uncle,
But he let me down.
Then I tried to replace him with my grandfather,
Who passed away right before I gave birth.
That also broke me at the time.
Then I started to think,
What is it that I really want?
Where do I want to be?

I’ve been subjected to bad things ever since I was a child.
It started with the bullying I’d get at school,
Because of my thin body and dark skin.

I dream of the day my little boy grows up,
To be an educated man.

My mother raised six girls.
My eldest sister got married when my father was still alive.
The rest of them got married later after he passed.

My daughters are the ones that keep me going,
And reassure my faith in God.

I’ve never felt safe.
My family is well-off,
And we have everything we need.
But that’s not enough.
I’ve never felt safe with my family.
There are always problems and fights.

My uncle, who was also my father-in-law,
Left me his ration card after his death.
My uncle’s ration card was used by him, his wife, and their children.
It’s especially helpful when buying bread.

I don’t know why I’m going to tell this story,
But I’ve bottled up so much inside me.

There was a period when my parents were separated,
And my grandfather interfered a lot in our lives.
He was a very cruel man,
And so was my mother.
