Protect Her

Protect Her

“Protect her!”
I hear this a lot about my daughter.
She likes to dance and sing in front of the TV.
When people see her dancing they’d say,
“She’ll grow up to be a loose girl!”
My daughter is only six years old!

It bothers me the most when my husband (her father) says it.
“It’s not about preventing her from doing something.
It’s about finding an outlet for her.
Playing ballet or gymnastics, for example.”

Most of our fights are a result of the things he says,
“You’re spoiling her.”
“You’re letting her go loose.”
I enrolled her in a swimming class two years ago.
My father thought it was a disastrous thing to do and I should be tried for it.

Their idea of “protection” is misconstrued.
It’s no different than my father putting me inside a box.
Do you think you’re protecting me by keeping me locked away?
