Don't You Ever Wash Your Hair?

“Sheep!”
“You look like a sheep!”
Everyone tells me whenever my hair grows out a little and starts to get curly.
Even at home they call me “Rufy” [editor’s note: “Rufy” is a play on kharoof, which is Arabic for “sheep”.]
I used to love my hair so much when it was long, but I’d have to shave it every so often so it didn’t look curly.

The first day of university, I came to class late and the professor stopped me and said:
“Why does your hair look like that? Do you not have any water at home to wash it with?”
I was so embarrassed, but I laughed it off.

I’ve been living abroad for four years now, and the last time I went to a barber was four years ago.
Everyone here loves my hair, especially my girlfriend and her family.
Whenever I go back to Egypt, I always wear a hat the entire time I’m there, no matter how hot and nasty the weather is.
I never want anyone to call me a sheep ever again.
