Medusa

My mother only likes straight hair.
She’d always straighten our hair, using various gels and keratin.
She wanted to straighten it in any way possible.
She wanted our hair to be like the actresses and models on TV.

I only recently found out that my hair was naturally curly.
That’s when I stopped straightening it and started taking care of it.
I didn’t want to ruin it.
And that’s when my parents started calling me “medusa.”
They don’t like my hair.

They made me feel like something was wrong with me because I stopped straightening it.
They made me feel like I looked ugly and homeless.
My friends like it, though. They say it suits me better.
