Saying “I Love You”

There was a time when home felt more like a hotel.
I only went there to eat and sleep.
Wake up,
And repeat.
It was as if I wasn’t living with my family.
Even my father wouldn’t call to ask where I was.

I felt like I wanted to let them know I was there,
But I didn’t know how to do it.
I’m close to my mother,
But not my father.
One day, I woke up in a good mood,
And told her,
“I adore you.”
She was surprised.
“Are you kidding?” she asked.
“I’m not kidding,” I replied.
“I just felt like telling you that.
I want you to know that I love you.
I’m not trying to upset you.
I hope you feel the same way.”
I was filled with positive energy when I told her that.
It gave me courage to express myself,
To not feel embarrassed,
And to not fear their reaction.
