Leers

A girl was walking to a supermarket near her house after iftaar when a kid—no older than 18—said the most disgusting things to her as he fondled himself.

She was on the phone with her mom when it happened. The incident shocked her into complete silence. She turned around in rage but was unable to even shout at him. He stood there and laughed.

“Is something the matter, my dear? Why aren’t you answering me? I'm getting worried.”

“It’s nothing, mama. Some jerk just did something annoying.”

“Come back home now, then.”

It was her rotten luck that she passed by him again on her way back, and he did the same thing. However, this time around, because she was near an qahwa and was feeling completely humiliated, she screamed at the top of her lungs, pointing at him and cursing.

None of the bystanders did anything, except for an old woman who reached out and patted her reassuringly: "It's okay." And a little girl who was on her bike ran after her and said, "Don't be afraid. Come with me and I’ll help you pass by him every day."

It turned out the kid was her neighbor. He bought bread across the street from her house every day.

When the men at the qahwa noticed what happened, they all seemed to clutch their hookahs more tightly and looked in her direction. They seemed to be assessing what she was wearing. They saw an unveiled girl, wearing a long-sleeved blouse and jeans. So, to them, she had it coming to her.

It was a matter of minutes before they turned away and continued watching their football match. Why would they interrupt a match for something as trivial as this?

And the saddest thing about all of this was that it happened during Ramadan. I felt sad from the bottom of my heart.
