Wiry Hair

I was bullied as a child for having curly hair.
People called me names like “mophead.”
Even my mother used to call me that.
She, like everyone else, thought straight hair was the essence of beauty.

I started straightening my hair at the age of 12.
I’ve been straightening my hair on a daily basis ever since.
My goal was to get rid of my horrible curly hair.
My hair got completely damaged.
But I didn’t have any other choice.

I had forgotten what my natural hair looked like until January 2017.
I decided to stop using heat and learn how to take care of my curly hair.
I wanted to be myself and wear my hair natural.

I’ve been heat-free for ten years now thanks to the support of a lot of people.
I love how I look and I love my curly hair.
