Older and Lovelier

Older and Lovelier

My story is different than the type of stories you post.
My parents have always been aware and informed, thank God.
One time, when I was younger, mama asked me to hand her some pads.
She wanted me to ask her what they were for.
“This is something all girls will need to use someday.
It’s a sign that they’re getting older and lovelier,” she replied simply.

Of course, my young brain still couldn’t comprehend things like ovulation, endometrium, and puberty,
But she helped me to gradually understand these things.

When my older sister got it,
And of course she was still shaken,
Because no matter how much you know,
It’s still a very new thing,
Mama tried not make a big deal out of the whole thing,
And kept making jokes with my sister.

Baba often buys us pads.
And if mama, for example, is staying over at a relative’s or something,
Baba will buy us pads and tell us where he’s put them in case we need them.
When I got my period,
Baba would come to the university campus,
(I lived away at the time to attend university)
And bring me clothes, food, and pads.

He never treated it like a disease or as something disgusting.
He also never avoided or shunned us like I heard happens in other households.
Thank God for parents who understand.
