Something annoying happens every Ramadan.
As a woman, I’m looked at as a glitch in the Egyptian societal system.
I’m seen as a problem, just because I don’t cover my hair.
I try my best to dress in long sleeved clothing during Ramadan.
Even though I don’t really have to.
And even then I still encounter loud exclamations of astaghfirullah in the streets,
As a way of expressing their disapproval.
Sometimes people will say things like,
“Why don’t you give us a break and just stay home?”
I wish, even if for a single day,
People would learn to respect one another.
And the men who fast would understand that they’re doing so for themselves,
Not for anyone else.
If fasting is just about feeling hungry, then it’s not really fasting.
How is it that you’re supposedly fasting for God if you don’t want to see another person eating?
I wish people would stop hurting each other, even if just verbally.
